Tourist Fined $25K For Scratching His Initial On Wall Of Roman Colosseum

The thing about the world’s archaeological treasures is that they’re awe-inspiring enough without any kind of extra embellishments. And just in case you are tempted to deface ancient history, perhaps the $24,865 fine one tourist will be paying for carving his initial into the wall of Rome’s Colosseum will change your mind.

A Russian visitor to the ancient amphitheater has been hit with a €20,000 fine for carving the letter “K” into a wall outside the building, reports The Guardian.

His act of vandalism might’ve been chalked up to some anonymous visitor, except for the fact that he was allegedly caught in the act by a guard and subsequently arrested by Roman police.

The director of the Colosseum said the high fine should serve as a lesson for others who might want to do damage to “a magnificent and symbolic monument.”

“You cannot write on a historic wall, it’s absolutely forbidden,” she said.

Of the six million annual visitors to the Colosseum, she says only five have been stopped by cops for vandalism this year.

Report: 109 Sears And Kmart Stores Now Expected To Close By Early 2015

There’s more cost-cutting planned at Sears Holdings through the end of this year and the beginning of next year. That news shouldn’t surprise anyone, but the total has increased to 39 Sears stores, and 70 Kmart stores, along with one Sears distribution center, one Kmart distribution center, and three Sears repair centers.

Financial research site Seeking Alpha used local news reports and information from current Sears and Kmart employees to assemble what it believes is a comprehensive national list of stores and facilities that are going to close. The list isn’t confirmed, because Sears Holdings will not confirm the truth of the list: at best, it will not deny the information that Seeking Alpha is putting out.

Two additions to the list are the Sears repair center and distribution center in Columbus, Ohio. The two Sears Auto locations that were slated for closing while the associated Sears store remained open have been removed from the Seeking Alpha list, probably due to clarification from Sears or updates from employees of that location. Some of the scheduled closing dates have also been moved up, which may prove problematic for shoppers using layaway plans, who now need to have their plans moved to another store or to Kmart.com, or perhaps canceled altogether.

We continue to count Sears and Sears Auto locations together, since we don’t know of any locations where a Sears department store and an Auto store are closing separately. Most consumers probably think of the Auto store a a department within Sears, especially if their local store is physically attached to the Sears store.

Car Manufacturers, Industry Groups Work To Prevent Car Cyberattacks

In this day and age, just about anything can be hacked, including your car. And with more and more vehicles including Internet capabilities, car manufacturers and industry groups are working against the clock to create cyber defenses for commercially available vehicles.

The Associated Press reports while there are no publicly known instances of a car being hacked, both groups have conducted tests that show how easily hackers can gain access to vehicles.

“You’re stepping into a rolling computer now,” says Chris Valasek, a computer security technician.

Valasek helped to shed light on the possibility of car hackings last year when he and a partner were able to control a 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Ford Escape by plugging into a port used by mechanics.

More recently in a Defense Department-funded test on a 2012 model American-made car, hackers demonstrated they could create the electronic equivalent of a skeleton key to unlock the car’s networks.

Kathleen Fisher, a computer scientist who oversaw the test, said that it was easy to “package up the smarts and make it available online, perhaps in a black-market type situation.”

The point of the test was to plug vulnerabilities and fix the computer code that controls a vehicle to protect them from known threats, Fisher says. A new code, which could be ready in a few years, will eventually be distributed to automakers, who could use it adapt it for their specific models to prevent hacks.

But a few years from now is a few too many for some companies in the car industry. Honda and Toyota, along with other brands are helping to establish an “information sharing and analysis center” patterned after efforts used by the financial industry to ward-off cyberattacks, the AP reports.

Additionally, officials with GM tell the AP that cybersecurity is “one of the highest priority things” the company has to deal with.

Michael Cammisa, director of safety for the Association of Global Automakers tells the AP that the industry has to change the way they design vehicles. Now instead of looking at how components might fail, they have to look at how someone might maliciously attack the vehicle.

One such group, Auto-ISAC announced this summer that it has created a program that aims to allow car companies to evaluate the credibility of threats and if an attack occurs let participants warn each other so they can conduct their own tests.

Other car manufacturers, including General Motors, have looked at the systems created by Boeing and defense companies that hold off hackers.

Walmart Workers Chain Massive Food Donation Bin Outside Home Of Alice Walton

Just days after another Walmart launched the holiday giving season by placing a food donation bin for employees to help out their co-workers in need, some workers have placed a much larger bin outside the home of someone who makes a little bit more than $10/hour from the nation’s largest retailer — Alice Walton.

Alice is the daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton. And while the business is publicly traded, the Walton family owns more than half of that stock, making Alice one of the world’s wealthiest people.

In Forbes’ latest list of billionaires, she ranked 10th, with a net worth of $38.8 billion, right behind her sister-in-law Christy (#8, with $41.3 billion) and brother Jim (#9, $40.2 billion), but ahead of older brother and Walmart Chairman S. Robson Walton (#11, $38.7 billion).

The massive purple bin was changed outside of Alice’s tony Park Avenue building, making this the closest thing to Walmart that you’ll find in Manhattan.

“We don’t want charity,” reads the message to Ms. Walton on the bin. “We want decent pay.”

This stunt comes in advance of the planned picketing/strikes outside of some Walmart stores during the upcoming Thanksgiving/Black Friday shopping weekend.
