For decades, Coach USA’s Gray Line sightseeing buses were the dominant player in New York City bus tours. Then in 2005, a competitor called CitySights came into the market and began chewing away at Gray Line’s market share.
This competition resulted in reasonable (but still kinda high) prices for tourists, as they could choose between the two bus company options, preventing both Gray Line and CitySights from jacking up their rates.
And so in 2009, the two companies created a joint venture called Twin America LLC, which would operate both the Gray Line buses and the CitySights buses, though both those brands would continue on, giving the illusion of competition.
The new company thus controlled 99% of the sightseeing bus business in NYC, and a non-compete agreement signed by all parties meant that neither of the brands could try to undercut the other on pricing.
Several class-action civil suits accused the hop-on, hop-off tour companies of forming a joint venture to illegally monopolize the sightseeing bus industry and conspiring to fix prices above market rate,
Today, The New York Daily News reports that the bus companies settled those class-action claims, meaning that around 4 million sightseers who bought hop-on, hop-off tour tickets since Feb. 1, 2009 could be eligible to claim part of the $19 million settlement.
The settlement must be approved by a judge before it becomes final.
Still unresolved is the 2012 antitrust complaint [PDF] filed by the NY state Attorney General. That case is still pending and is slated to finally go to trial later this year.
“This lawsuit is an important step toward restoring competition and protecting tourists in New York City,” NY AG Eric Schneiderman said in a Justice Department news release at the time of the lawsuits filing. “The iconic double-decker Gray Line and City Sights buses are seen all over New York City but few people know they are run as a monopoly. The formation of Twin America has meant higher prices and less competition. Tourists who come to the Big Apple deserve better.”

Phishing, of course, is when a scammer sets up a fake website that looks like a real one, trying to capture your real login credentials. A phishing site could masquerade as the login page for your bank, PayPal, your phone account, or any other site where obtaining your credentials could lead to untold mischief. Phishing usually begins with an instant message or an e-mail, but in this case, scammers tried to reel in victims with a phone call.
For customers who don’t know any better, it probably sounded like a great idea. People reported that their phone rang, with caller ID identifying the caller as “BELL ATLANTIC” or something else that could plausibly be Verizon. A recorded message told them to visit the site MyVerizon59.com (which has now been shut down: don’t bother checking) for a $59 credit on their Verizon bill. The site looked like a Verizon login page, but just harvested visitors’ information. Made-up phone numbers and passwords worked, too, when the site was still operational.
This wasn’t the first-ever phishing scheme, and won’t be the last. Be vigilant, check out any too-good-to-be-true promises that come out of nowhere, and check with the company when something just doesn’t sound right. A rep for the fast food colossus tells Bloomberg that “We’ve adjusted work schedules for our employees and access to our facilities to assist the Oak Brook Police Department and address the protests and the related traffic congestion.”
The organizers of the event are seeking higher pay for fast food workers. After learning that the corporate HQ had effectively been shuttered for the day, the protest shifted toward the nearby McDonald’s campus where you’ll find Hamburger University.
“McDonald’s has cleared and closed its corporate headquarters,” said the communications director for the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago tells Bloomberg. “The closing reflects McDonald’s refusal to address the growing concerns of workers and failure to take action to raise wages.”
Another rep for McDonald’s explained to the Chicago Tribune that corporate employees were working remotely today.
“The decision was made because that building is in a high traffic area, off a major highway and is next to a busy shopping mall and the pedestrian and vehicle traffic and congestion would be unbearable,” said the rep. “They are working from home and the rest of us are working as usual.”
That same rep told HuffPo that some of the buildings on the company’s main campus remained open for business today.
HuffPo also reports that police arrested a rabbi and others who disregarded a police order to disperse.
