CFPB Warns Consumers That Some Credit Card Companies Aren’t Disclosing Risks Of Promotional Offers


With a plethora of credit cards on the market, consumers may be drawn to companies and banks that offer the best promotion at any give time. While those deals might seem like a steal at first, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is concerned that companies aren’t clearly disclosing the costs and risks of those offers in a way that consumers can easily understand.


The CFPB issued a notice to credit card companies warning them that deceptively marketing promotions, such as zero interest balance transfers, convenience checks and deferred interest offers, could lead to legal action.


CFPB examinations of large banks and credit card issuers found that some companies may be failing to adequately explain the terms of certain promotional offers, leaving consumers confused about why they are incurring new interest charges on their purchases.


In the case of balance transfers, many companies attempt to lure consumers with zero interest promotions. However the CFPB says that some companies’ aren’t telling consumers that transferring an outstanding balance actually increases interest rate charges for new purchases.


And while a free grace period promotion that allows consumers to incur no interest on purchases may seem like a bargain, it comes with a few strings attached.


Sure, consumers who sign up for these cards and pay off their balance each month may enjoy a period where they do not have to pay interest on purchases. But if a consumer has an outstanding balance, the grace period doesn’t apply and they are charged interest on all new purchases.


Often the only way consumers can avoid interest charges on new purchases made with this kind of credit card is to pay off their entire statement balance, including the promotional balance and the new purchases, by their monthly billing due date, which can be quite costly.


Consumers who decide to accept promotional offers from banks and credit card companies should:


• Avoid the interest: Consumers that do not carry a balance can take advantage of promotional rates and avoid unexpected interest if they don’t make new purchases with the card until they pay off the entire balance. To avoid interest charges on new purchases, these consumers should consider paying with cash, debit, or another credit card that doesn’t have a balance.


• Make payments on time to avoid surprise charges: Consumers should be sure to make payments on time. For promotional and deferred interest balances, consumers should pay off the entire balance before the end of the promotional period.


• Compare the interest rates among credit cards: Consumers that carry a balance on all their credit cards should compare the interest rates among their cards to decide which is the best deal for new purchases. These consumers should also consider paying for new purchases with cash or debit.

There are at least four people in the world who have nothing better to do for three weeks than sit in lawn chairs and wait for the new iPhone. And we know this, because there are currently four people who have been camping out at the New York City Apple store since last week, sitting in lawn chairs and waiting for the new iPhone to go on sale on Sept. 19.

That’s the date everyone is expecting for what will likely be the iPhone 6 (though who knows, maybe we’ll get an iPhone 5z or something wacky), which is why these four souls have come together on the pavement of the Big Apple to sit and wait, reports Quartz.


The thing is, these two sets of twosomes — a team of cousins and a husband-and-wife set — aren’t in it just for the next shiny bit of gadgetry: Both groups have other incentives to be there, namely, that they’re there because of companies who want their names in the news along with these campers.


One company is paying for all the food the cousins will need to eat during their campout, and have supplied them with T-shirts with the company logo for marketing purposes. They’ll also get the iPhone of their choice for free, if that’s what gets announced at the upcoming Sept. 9 event.


The couple arrived at the store a day after the cousins, but paid them $2,500 to line jump so the startup the husband is consulting for can get a better chunk of the publicity surrounding his time in line, they explained.


And if you’ve got the time to spare and the means to do it, it could be sort of like vacation? I guess?


“Who wouldn’t want a free phone for just being here for a few weeks and wearing some T-shirts?” as one cousin puts it.


Who indeed. And hey, free T-shirt.

The Bastard Child Of Comcast/TWC Merger Gets A Name: GreatLand Connections

While plenty of us are still banging on the church window, trying to break up the impending nuptials of Comcast and Time Warner Cable, the couple, along with their “close friend” (ahem) Charter Communications, have already given a name to the company that will be spun off and left to fend for itself in the wild because there just isn’t enough room for everyone’s kids. That company, which will instantly become the fifth-largest cable operator in the U.S., will have the craptastic name of GreatLand Connections Inc.

GreatLand had originally been dubbed SpinCo when Comcast announced it would be shedding 2.5 million customers to appease regulators, and that Charter would own a 1/3 stake in that new company.


But SpinCo is the kind of name that finance professors use in exam questions, or really bad satirists use when trying to be clever. That’s why the involved parties all cooked up the bland, Hallmark Channel-sounding name of GreatLand, which sounds more like a dairy conglomerate than a cable company.


Then again, we still think Xfinity sounds like a gentleman’s club, or at least a cheeseball nightclub at a Ramada in upstate New York.


“We are pleased to publicly announce the name of this exciting new company we are building,” said Michael Willner, who also happens to be the President and CEO of GreatLand, so it’s kind of like your mom saying she loves you just the way you are. “The name GreatLand Connections pays homage to the rich history and striking geographies of the diverse communities in which the company will operate. It brings to mind our commitment to connecting people and businesses with terrific products and excellent service in the almost 1000 historic communities — large and small — across the 11 states we will serve.”
