Sorry, But New “American Beagle Outfitters” Line Is Probably An April Fool’s Joke

You can dress like your dog. Or is your dog dressing like you?

We’re generally fans of big companies pulling April Fool’s jokes — who can get mad when there’s laughter involved? But it’s kind of waste of a perfectly good pun for American Eagle Outfitter’s new “American Beagle” line that we’re pretty sure will turn out to just be an April Fool’s stunt.

Over at the retailer’s website there’s a whole slew of dogs dressed up in outfits that customers can’t buy. But of course there’s an option to “shop this look for women.” Because men don’t like matching their dogs? Who knows.

Anyway, in a press release, the company hints that the line will be out “later this Spring,” but customers can sign up for a waiting list to get 20% off normal American Eagle purchases. One dollar of each order will benefit American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“Designed to perfectly match their owner’s on-trend American Eagle wardrobe, the canine collection features must-haves such as slimming doggy jeggings, fur-friendly bikinis and statement accessories, creating head-to-tail looks that complement the unique style and personality of every pooch, big or small,” the press release reads. Yes, dogs in bikinis.

But as Buzzfeed points out, the whole thing probably isn’t going to happen. The site asked an American Eagle spokesperson if the line is real or just a joke, and said person wouldn’t say yes or no. There also aren’t any details about when the items will be available or how much they’ll cost anywhere on the site or in the press release.

It’s a win-win for the retailer — if there is a doggie line in the works, we’re sure there are plenty of people (you know who you are and I am not judging you) who would absolutely love to dress up in matching outfits with their favorite pooch and spend some serious cash in the process.

And if it’s not real, AE can just be like, “HA! Great joke, right? Dogs and people wearing matching clothes?!? Hilarious.”

Now pardon me while I go back to trying to get these homemade skinny jeans on my cat. He’s soo self-conscious of his weight.
