We can only assume that purchasing a $10 million yacht must be a very happy occasion. For the new owners of one such pleasure boat in Washington, that joy quickly turned into a nightmare when the pricey purchase capsized while being delivered. Thankfully, the five men trapped inside were rescued, but the future of the boat is a bit murky.
The 90-foot yacht began to tip just as the workers put it in the water Sunday evening, KIRO TV reports.
“The boat tilted to one side, and though not unusual, the amount of tilt was a little abnormal, so we paused to collect ourselves and assure that everything was going be right, and as we continued to lower it down, it pitched and that’s when it went over,” one of the crew members says.
Five men trapped inside the vessel were pulled to safety after first responders and rescuers smashed a window. No one was seriously injured.
“I just want to thank the lord that we all got out safe,” another crew member says of the incident. “It seemed like forever, but it was probably 60 seconds to a minute.”
The yacht’s builder will cover salvage costs, which were still being determined, KIRO reports.
Coast Guard divers were on hand after the yacht capsized to remove fuel from the board. So far there has been no fuel leak reported. Authorities hoped to have the boat removed by Monday evening.
