Land Rover Recalls 40,000 Luxury SUVs For Passenger Airbag Issues

Safety is a priority for car manufacturers, if it wasn’t there likely wouldn’t be recalls at all. But since it is, the recalls keep coming, this time in the form of 40,000 Jaguar Land Rover luxury SUVs with potentially malfunctioning passenger airbags.

According to a notice [PDF] from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Land Rover recalled 17,066 model year 2010 to 2015 LR2 and 23,485 model year 2012 to 2013 Range Rover Evoque SUVs in the United States.

Back in July, officials with Land Rover identified [PDF] a technical issue could prevent the front passenger airbag from deploying.

A component within the Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may fail, resulting in the front passenger airbag being totally or partially disabled.

In the event of a crash, if the component fails, the airbag may not deploy properly increasing the risk of injury to the passenger.

Land Rover will notify owners and dealers of the issue starting in late August. Dealers will then update the Restraint Control Module software.
