Google said it was building it, and now it’s come: YouTube launched a new video subscription service called Music Key today, at an initial price of $7.99 per month for the beta offering. That fee keeps the ads away for users who are sick of sitting through commercials before watching content.
In a blog post today outlining some other changes to YouTube, the company says the $7.99 rate is a promotional price discounted from the $9.99 it’ll charge per month eventually, that allows for ad-free music, background play and offline viewing.
That price also includes a subscription to Google Play Music, with the ability to watch many YouTube official music videos from that app starting “in the coming days”
As Music Key is in beta mode, it’s not everywhere yet — interested parties can submit their email to get notifications of when the service is available.
“To turn YouTube into your perfect music service, we’re launching YouTube Music Key as a beta with our biggest music fans first, and then we’ll bring YouTube Music Key to the whole world together,” the post notes. “So, if you see an invite in your app or email, try it out for six months for free.”
